Oltrepò Pavese Wineries: More thanCentury of History

Cantine Storiche Oltrepo Pavese - Vivioltrepò

The Oltrepò Pavese have a large land with an ancient winemaking tradition . On its hills, vine cultivation has centuries-old origins and some wine estates have over a century of history behind them.

The winemakers of the Oltrepò – historic but in step with the times also thanks to the new generations of children and grandchildren of the founders who are part of it – have been able to interpret and enhance the native and international vines, giving life to wines of great expression.

In this article, we propose a short journey to discover some fascinating historic cellars of the Oltrepò Pavese , which contribute to handing down the richness and diversity of this beautiful territory of ours and its many excellent wines.

These wineries, together with numerous other wine-making companies in the Oltrepò that were founded in more recent times and are equally valid and solid, represent the memory and the wine-making heritage of a precious place like the Oltrepò Pavese.

Among the ultra-centenary estates and cellars :

    Ballabio since 1905
    Brandolini Alessiosince 1873
    Cà di Frara since 1905
    Calvi since 1893
    Conte Vistarino since 1850
    Defilippi since 1907
    Fiamberti since 1814

    Frecciarossa since 1919
    Le Fracce since 1905
    Losito e Guarini since 1910
    Marchese Adorno since 1834
    Marchesi di Montalto since 1890
    Monsupello since 1893
    Montelio since 1803

    Percivalle since 1915
    Poggio Alessi since 1570
    Tonalini since 1865
    Torrevilla since 1907
    Torti since 1910
    Travaglino since 1868
    Vanzini since 1890

Some of them have cellars with brick vaults full of timeless charm, there are the barrel rooms where the wine is refined, the pupitres where the classic method sparkling wines mature at a slow pace. All of them are surrounded by green expanses of vineyards and those positioned higher up offers some enchanting views.

The Cantina Fiamberti – in Canneto Pavese – is among the oldest, not only in Oltrepò, but in Lombardy. On 2014 they celebrate their 200th anniversary.

There are Wineries with large rooms for wine tasting that are well suited to hosting private and corporate events: the Tenuta Travaglino in Calvignano, which dates back to the second half of the 19th century, for example, has a huge and wonderful room in which you can taste its wines that recalls those of ancient castles, as well as outdoor spaces for tastings them even in the summer. The Tenuta – which has 80 hectares of vineyards – is surrounded by a centuries-old park of over 3 hectares.

Some have very large vineyards and the experience of the owners, winemakers for generations, leads to obtaining a notable
range of wines : 33 hectares of vineyards and more than 15 labels from the Vanzini Winery, whose lands are located between San Damiano al Colle and other locations on our beautiful hills such as Montù Beccaria and Canneto Pavese, with grapes coming from different soils which have allowed the Vanzini’s family to diversify their production of Oltrepò wines for more than 130 years .

Others have large estates with a manor house, as in the case of Frecciarossa , in Casteggio, where you can put aside the frenzy of the daily life by visiting the gardens, the rooms, the cellars, the cooperage and tasting the excellent wines typical of the Oltrepò Pavese under the beautiful portico.

Others are also farmhouses with rooms , as in the case of Montelio , in Codevilla, where you can enjoy one or more days of taste within one of the most historic companies.

There are wineries suitable as wedding locations.

Several also organize guided tours of the vineyards and cellars, such as at Tenuta Conte Vistarino , where you can also see Villa Fornace and the Winter Garden, by booking a visit.

Others finally produce both wine and oil, as in the case of Cantine Associate di Torrevilla , which is located in Codevilla and Torrazza Coste. Il Palazzo Torrevilla, in Torrazza Coste, is an historic building that has hosted the Management and Administrative headquarters of Torrevilla since 1908.

For wine lovers (and also for their family, children included), away to spend time together when it comes to wine estates, the hills of our magnificent Oltrepò Pavese is an excellent choice.
