Places of faith in Oltrepò Pavese in Ponte Nizza

Ponte Nizza is a municipality in the Oltrepò Pavese region of Lombardy. It is located in the valley of the Staffora stream, at the confluence with the Nizza stream and is also known as a pilgrimage destination.
Historical Origins
📜The area belonged to the Malaspina Marquisate.
The municipality of Ponte Nizza was established in 1928, uniting the municipalities of Pizzocorno, Trebbiano Nizza, San Ponzo Semola and Cecima.
The hamlet of Pizzocorno also belonged to the Malaspina family, the main seat of the Olivola branch of the Spino Fiorito line.
After the murder of the Malaspina of Olivola in 1413, the hamlet was reacquired by the Malaspina of Godiasco, who held it until 1797.
San Ponzo was donated in 943 by Kings Hugh and Lothair to the Bishop of Pavia, together with the village of Cecima. In the 16th century, it passed to the Sforza family of Santa Fiora. It took the name San Ponzo Semola in 1863.
Cecima was granted autonomy in 1956. Trebbiano Nizza belonged to the Malaspina family from 1164, then became an autonomous jurisdiction.
Places of Faith
Two of the most important sacred sites of the Oltrepò Pavese are located on its territory, making Ponte Nizza a spiritual pilgrimage destination ⛪:

The Hermitage of St Albert of Butrio, a spiritual place
The construction of the hermitage began in 1030 at the behest of Albert of Butrio, a hermit of whom little is known.
His origins are shrouded in mystery; there is no information on his life before he became a hermit in the Staffora Valley.
It is believed that he belonged to the Obertenghi family, a noble Lombard dynasty, but there is no certain information.
According to sources, he miraculously healed a young man belonging to a family of marquises who, as a sign of gratitude, built a Romanesque church dedicated to Our Lady.
St Albert of Butrio also became an abbot and is venerated as a saint for his life of holiness and devotion, as well as for the miracle he performed. His exemplary life and spiritual commitment have been recognised by the Church.
It is a place charged with spirituality that welcomes many visitors from all over in the Romanesque church and cloister, which overlooks the well courtyard.

Encounter between nature and faith: the San Ponzo Caves
The small hamlet of San Ponzo Semola is known for its nearby caves and the bed of the hermit saint St Ponzo.
It is not exactly a hermitage like that of St Albert of Butrio, but it is a place of great historical and spiritual interest.
The caves of San Ponzo are natural cavities excavated in Monte Vallassa by water infiltration over millions of years.
St Ponzo lived in these caves as a hermit. His life of prayer, penance and dedication to the Christian faith made him an example of holiness.
St Ponzo Semola is about 3 mk from the caves. You can breathe in the past as you stroll through the narrow streets overlooked by the flower-decked balconies of the stone houses.
The church of San Ponzo Semola has also become a place of pilgrimage because it houses the remains of St Ponzo.
The village is named after the saint and after the Semola stream, a small left-hand tributary of the Staffora stream, which runs alongside the area.
What to see in Ponte Nizza and its hamlets
In addition to the Hermitage and the caves, in San Ponzo you can visit the parish church with a beautiful bell tower and clock, and in Pizzocorno, in addition to the parish church of Sant’Ambrogio, you can see the remains of two medieval castles.
