A day at the Archaeological Museum of Casteggio and Oltrepò Pavese.
The Casteggio’s Museum or rather, the Civic Archaeological Museum of Casteggio and Oltrepò Pavese known as MAC , is a fascinating place rich in history, a thousand-year history.
The MAC was born in 1974 thanks to a group of local enthusiasts and the Municipal Administration, following a very important discovery: two Roman tombs.
The Museum is housed in the rooms of the Palazzo Certosa Cantù in the Comune di Casteggio , a town located on the first hills of the Oltrepò Pavese where there have been settlements of ancient civilizations since the Neolithic period.
The Casteggio’s Archaeological Museum offers a fascinating journey through time that goes through prehistory, the Roman era, the Lombard era, late antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance , with thematic focuses on cave paintings and the production of ceramic objects and mosaics, on the customs of local populations over the centuries and, again, on the lifestyle of the Romans who also colonised this area of the peninsula.
This beautiful Archaeological Museum is synonymous of culture and entertainment for every age group.
After all, who as a child has never dreamed of being an archaeologist, a paleontologist, or becoming a student of Piero Angela?
A visit to Casteggio’s Museum means:
- Spend time with family
- Learn historical facts in an interesting and fun way
- Know the history of a territory – Oltrepò Pavese
- Take a day trip just a stone’s throw from Pavia and Milan and with the convenience of a motorway exit for those arriving from other areas of Lombardy or Liguria, Emilia Romagna and Piemonte.
In the rooms on the ground floor and the upper floor, the past comes to life through various archaeological finds.
For example, you can admire shark teeth dating back to the Miocene …
Incredible to think that there were sharks (and therefore an ocean), where now you can admire the Monte Vallassa, in Valle Staffora!
It is the ideal place for an exciting day and activities with childrens, even with adverse weather conditions; in particular, there are various educational activities and workshops for childrens like rock painting, ceramic art, and mosaic making.
Palazzo Certosa Cantù also hosts a Library : in addition to reading, the Library is also available for private events.
📍Save the date: Sunday 22nd September is the reopening day of the Museum.
For opening hours and prices, it is best to consult the MAC website.
Here is one of the good intentions by returning from these 2024 holidays: to get to know Oltrepò Pavese also through its cultural proposals and discover the secrets of it’s past, with a fascinating journey through ancient civilizations.
You can’t miss the opportunity to experience closely our distant history!
